If it helps at all, I would mention that I teach theology in a very
conservative Calvinist denomination. So far as I know, none of the churches
with which I have dealt has addressed this question directly. On the one
hand, as with my kids, they began using the computer as soon as they could
recognize the letters of the alphabet on the keys and not damage the
equipment.

The ethical problems arise more with use and access to information or
persons who might be detrimental. Then, most of the discussions center on
means of screening out unwanted sites, and care in talking, chatting, or
e-mailing with persons the kids don't know. That's just an updated form of
"Don't talk to strangers."

Actually, the older kids get, the harder it is to know what they are doing
on the Internet, and the harder it is to stop them. My 15-year-old knows
more about the Internet, IRC, and the operating system than I do. So far as
I'm concerned, we as parents need to build trust, instill values, and set
positive examples for our own children. If we don't, rules about when to use
the computer are not going to be very useful.

Best wishes

Marc
