I coordinate a program conducted on interactive television. The same
students attend two semesters during the academic year for a total of 28
three hour classes. I schedule the third and last classes of the entire
program at a central location for face-to-face interaction. Though with
two-way video interactive television students can see and hear each other, I
feel it is important to have students make personal contact. In part this
is in response to student requests of previous semesters. Students
appreciate the opportunity to have face-to-face meetings with those they
will and have shared an intensive experience with.
Of note, I found that using the very last class, as opposed to a class just
late in the program, is very important to closure. One needs to plan
activities to break the ice for face-to-face interaction as no one in the
group is used to a large face-to-face class. It is interesting how
face-to-face skills have to be learned (when to speak, making contact with
those from other sites, etc.).
