1. A Million Person On-Line Learning Project: Quest. Most on-line learning
efforts involve hundreds or maybe thousands of learners. Here is a million
person effort to examine. The project is called Galapagos Quest. It is
aimed at classrooms in K to 12 schools, but has a lot to teach us about the
elements of a successful on-line learning implementation. Schools are
charged a fee that starts in the low hundreds of dollars, based on the
number of classrooms involved. The teachers and students follow the
real-time efforts of an expedition to the Galapagos Islands. There are
journals, photos and sounds, learning activities, collaboration, surveys and
other dialogues. The project uses a combo of web and CD-ROM along with
teacher kits. There are over 1 Million students involved in the project.
Check it out at their web site ---

2. Road Warrior Computer Warning: 30 Minute Moment: Many hotels have
changed their billing process for telephone calls. In response to the
enormous pressure for out-going lines, a good number of hotels have started
to add a per minute surcharge for all calls over 30 minutes. In the hotel
that I am staying in here in Pittsburgh, a 800 number call or local call
starts to incur a 10 cents a minute charge after 30 minutes. If you don't
check the rate card and are doing some serious email or on-line work, the
checkout bill could be a shock. I have downloaded a timer that keeps track
of the on-line time and alerts me at the 28 minute mark. I log off and log
back on to avoid the surcharge. There are several dozen of these timers
available at http://www.download.com do a file search using the keyword
"timer" Traveler beware!
3. TechLearn Tops 1,000 Registrations: We are pleased to announce that
TechLearn '99 has reached the 1,000 person mark in registrations. Our goal
is to accelerate registration for TechLearn '99 so that we can start a
series of pre-conference seminars and classes via on-line delivery, to help
build this unique learning community. As you know Bill Cosby, Kevin
Dychwald and Loretta LaRoche have already been announced as keynoters.
Today, we are pleased to add Kevin Kelly, the editor at large of WIRED
magazine as a keynote presenter. Kevin is the author of a best selling book
on New Rules for the New Economy and a great thinker about the economics of
the internet economy. Kevin will be looking at the key issues of how to
charge back for learning and the impact of technology on the valuation of
knowledge. If you would like to register (and pay later) for TechLearn '99
just go to http://www.techlearn.com There will be a limit on registrations
in order to protect the learning design of the Conference. Dates are
October 31 to November 3rd and the location is Walt Disney World, Orlando,
Florida.
4. Learning Quote: Lou Gonzalez. One of our most supportive readers if Lou
Gonzalez from Florida Power and Light. Lou sends us this learning quotation
today, without a known author..but it fits. (If you would like to suggest a
learning quotation, just send them to quote@masie.com:
An educated mind is useless without a focused will and dangerous without a
loving heart."

5. What To Call It? Convergence Challenges Terminology: As the
functionality of real-time (synchronous) tools expands and converges, we are
facing a terminology gap. What do we call the category of tools that do
the following:
* Allow a presenter to display and change slides viewed by learners over the
internet
* Enable a chat for collaboration
* Deliver surveys or quizzes
* Post learner information
* Assist with application sharing
Is this a virtual classroom? Is it a collaborative tool? Is it a meeting
assistance tool? We need a name for this category, so that organizations
can dialogue about various tools and systems as a technology segment. If we
call it a classroom, what about meeting uses of the tool? Could you take a
few minutes and send me a note about this to names@masie.com We will post
a summary in a few days.
6. Learning Decision: Organization Wide Learning Task Forces. One of the
key strategies for handling the maze of technology for learning options is
to build an organization wide Learning Task Force. We have been tracking a
dozen of these task forces and they are powerful tools for building
collaboration across varied business units exploring learning technology.
One great example is Chase Manhattan Bank. Over the past year, they have
drawn together dozens of lines of business to share information and
strategies for approaching learning technology. The task force model
recognizes that business units may decide to implement learning technology
on their own to meet immediate needs, yet there are ways to share and
coordinate knowledge and experiments across the entire organization. The
task force at Chase has created a decision support database and has been a
great point of contact for the organization to review new products and
approaches.
The issue of building organization strategies is a key topic that will be
explored at Learning Decisions '99 to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from May
12 to 14th. (http://www.masie.com)
