Mark Freeman of The University of Technology, Sydney presented a paper at
ASCILITE98 (http://cedir.uow.edu.au/ASCILITE98/, Wollongong, December)
which described his experiences using an asynchronous role play within the
TopClass groupware tool. I was very impressed with this work, not just for
it's thoroughness, but because this is an example of how a technology is
more than a facilitator of an instructional strategy or shows how a
strategy may be translated to an online environment. It showed how the
technology tangibly enhances it. Those examples are rare enough. He
describes how the asynchronous nature of the medium allowed students who
were normally very quiet to adopt certain roles. The details are in the
paper, which, if you contact Mark, he may be able to forward to you,

Regards,
John
