I was catching up on my reading and in the Feb. 15 issue of InfoWorld there
was an article about a new Lotus product called QuickPlace. It provides a
web-based project management area with a built in calendar, threaded
discussion capability and even forms routing. The dean here has been
interested in finding some type of project management application for quite
some time but all the ones I have evaluated have been extremely complex and
require a lot of administration. This solution from Lotus appears to be
very easy to use and administer and best of all it is web based. A user can
access the "space" from any location with a web browser. There is no need
to install special client software on any of the user's computers or
anything. The PR blurb says it takes only 5 minutes to install the service
on a Windows NT 4.0 server (does not require Domino!) Right now the software
works with only the Windows Netscape 4.x Client but they are finishing the
programming to enable it to work with Mac Netscape clients as well. I think
it could serve as a collaborative instructional environment too. Lotus has
setup a demo server where you can set up a sample space at
http://www.quickplace.com.
Lotus says the full commercial version will cost $995 (I don't know if they
are offering any academic discounts). I have written to Lotus to ask if
documents can be "mailed" directly to the quickplace you establish (I
couldn't determine this by reading the documentation). This capability
would be more convenient than trying to remember to go into quickplace and
import your document everytime you create a project or class-related
document. I will let you all know what they tell me.
