Dear Colleagues,

I have been following the discussion so far on "Effective pedagogies for
managing collaborative learning in on-line learning environments" and wish
to introduce some discussion on the role of learning theory in developing
effective pedagogies. I am currently writing a literature review on the
application of social constructivism to the use of IT for teaching and
learning in higher education. My study is looking at Australian
Universities but I believe that the outcomes have much wider application.
In summary, I believe that social constructivism, which includes concepts
such as situated cognition and cognitive apprenticeships and
problem/case/project based learning is an ideal theoretical framework for
higher education, particularly those courses which lead to a specific
profession with its own unique "culture" or "community of practice". If we
apply this framework to the use of IT we find that the use of the web to
create "constructivist learning environments" which are supported by online
collaborative learning via email and bulletin boards etc (CMC)represents
the most effective use of current technologies. If you want to see an
example of this theoretical framework put into practice go to the following
