To enter the discussion posed by Merrill and D'Eon, let me add:

It seems to me that the issue of direct instruction versus self-directed
learning relates to Jerome Bruner's theory of instruction as discussed in
the Heinich, Molenda, Russell, et al. text. Bruner's theory indicates that
learning proceeds from more direct to less direct methods of encountering
topics/subjects to be learned, and that the selection of a mode of
instruction is dependent on the learner's current status with respect to an
instructional continuum that is required for any learning situation.
