Look at Michael Spector's paper on ITFORUM
http://itech1.coe.uga.edu/itforum/paper9/paper9.html
I'd also look at tools like Creator (previously known as Cocoa and KidSim),
where kids actually build their own models. It's a different model than
the Logo equivalent (Microworlds) or Stella, using rule-based modelling
rather than procedural or quantitative, but quite powerful and easy to
grasp. Another candidate is AgentSheets.

What a silly statement. We're not talking about engagement being the
subject of learning, but a component of the experience. Engagement is the
buzzword used to capture the affective experience of immersion in an
interaction. It's more than entertainment; it's motivating not only the
affective or emotional side but also the intellect. I've argued that if
you align educational and engagement elements, they mutually reinforce to
make an experience more effective and engaging than either alone. I'm
happy to hear a better term, but to disparage it on these grounds seems
facile. -- Clark
