Dear Discussants
I didn’t find a great deal of new information on which to comment today. The
discussion is interesting but is complicated by our various understanding of
what is meant by learning styles. I have tried to clarify my meaning in my
previous posting.
Arun-Kumar Tripathi thanks for the Scientific American reference.
Interesting.
Leonard Rosen The book mentioned is very interesting but I’m not sure that it
relates to our discussion.
Elaine Van Melle Thank you for the references to some key papers on learner
style and related issues.
Philip Duchastel raises an interesting question, “Is learning style trait or
skill? Could a surface approach be considered merely a deficiency in study
skill?” As should be clear from my previous posting this is not consistent
with my intent by the use of the term. But I’m not really interested in a
semantic debate about what should be called what. My simple, straight forward
(I thought) message is that the primary structure of an instructional strategy
is determined by goals and that this strategy can be fine tuned by adjusting
for individual differences (my intent by learner style). Obviously not
everyone agrees.
Barry Jackson discussed “Approach to learning”. I don’t think that this is
what I intended by learning style.
Arun-Kimar Tripathi recommended Brent G. Wilson’s paper. If you haven’t read
this paper it is provocative. I don’t agree with Brent. He always was
somewhat of a rebel. I will stand by my position that there is a science of
instruction and that the principles of this science can be discovered.
