Introduction: Hello, all. I am Tony Fadale. I subscribed a couple of
days ago but I am just getting around to introducing myself. I look
forward to this group’s discussions and insights. (My next job is to
read Dr. Merrill’s paper.) The following is not meant to be
pretentious. I just couldn’t think of any other way to summarize what I
am doing.
I am a doctoral student in Educational Technology at Pepperdine
University, Los Angeles, California . I am also a project manager at
the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Museum of Tolerance, in Los Angeles,
California. I am in the midst of collecting data chapters 4 and 5 of my
dissertation. The subject of the dissertation is the use of a virtual
network as a professional tool for follow-up to educator workshops.
Specifically the dissertaion is a about the use of the virutal network
to act as the means of follow-up to a six day curriculum/technology
workshop for fifth- and sixth-grade teachers and library media
specialists. The sample (94 educators) comes from 21 schools and 14
states in the United States. The particular focus of the group is to
teach tolerance through literature-based, project-based multimedia
lessons. The sample is made up of participants in my project called
Teaching Steps to Tolerance. The funds for the project come from a
Federal grant (USA). The question I am researching is can the
telecommunication tools (synchronous and asynchronous) be used as an
effective follow-up to a professional development experience? Can the
school-based team who attended the workshop be energized and motivated
to remain a dynamic team by belonging to a virtual network made up of
other educators dedicated to the same goal?
I am interested in how the use of telecommunications follow up can
improve the impact of professional development experiences. I am also
interested in what the constructivist principles (Vygotsky) have to do
with the success of a virtual network.
