David Merrill's paper has certainly set me thinking.

I'm inclined to broadly agree with his assessment of the significance of
Learning Styles, and the implications for the design of teaching
interventions - that the range of Learning Styles should be taken into
consideration when designing teaching (instruction) but does not form an
adequate basis for determining the main elements of a teaching strategy.

A firmer basis for designing teaching strategies would seem to me to be the
use of Approaches to Learning frameworks (as exemplified in the work of
Entwhistle, Saljo, Ramsden, and others) and their strong relationship with
levels of learning outcomes achieved.

As a side issue, I notice that this work, while having an increasingly
important effect in pedagogical thought in Australia , the UK and other
parts of Europe, does not appear to have made a great impact in the US. Why
might this be?

looking forward to the discussion...

Barry
