William
thanks for the response
I think " engage" is like Jean Luke Picard (Startrek) saying where to go but
you don't really know what is happening beyond that. There is direction but
no substance.
Students engage but many times they do not arrive at the destination.
My point is that many teachers and possibly researchers see being "engaged
(quietly working through a program etc)" as learning which by my research is
not necessarily true. To find out what is going on, you have to:

(1) look a little deeper into what's going on. (I use qualitative methods,
specially exercise sheets for my simulations learnings and more). Look into
thinking, metacognition. use of intelligence modes and more.
(2) Use different teaching and learning methods
(3) focus on different ways students should learn with and without technology
(problem solving, experiential, construtivistic, inquiry based and more).

My experience is with internet, simulation and software use in this regard.
I have "pulling " more of these ideas together and will have more to say in
the week or two. Your communications are helping me to integrate some more
ideas and perspectives.I am actively melding the thoughts which goes beyond
being engaged."
More soon about this

I was intrigued by Dr. Eric Flescher comments about the insufficiency of
students becoming "engaged" with learning. The criticisms
seem a little unfair, because some of us consider getting students engaged in
learning is an achievement. He implies, I think, that
being engaged is not "active" learning. But isn't this a semantic problem?

He asks that we look beyond technology and just "being engaged." How do we do
that?
Technology is central to on-line learning, usually limiting what students can
do in the way of "active" learning. Is dialog and
debate considered "active" learning. If so, we are stuck with e-mail software
that organizes e-mail messages rather than in-context
references to specific issues within student postings.

That is why we at Texas A&M have been using the FORUM98 conferencing system,
which lets students create a web of in-context linked
documents. A more recent innovation that might contribute to active learning
is a browser-based system that lets students (or
teachers) annotate Web pages - in context! See
