2nd Call For Participation
Roles of Communicative Interaction in
Learning to Model in Mathematics and Science
C-LEMMAS Conference
Ajaccio, Corsica
15th - 18th April 1999
URL: http://cbl.leeds.ac.uk/~c-lemmas/
Important Dates
Application for financial support - 14th February 1999 (coming soon!)
Paper submissions - 28th February 1999.
Early conference registration - 28 February 1999.
Short presentation registrations - 30th March 1999.
IMPORTANT:
Decide NOW and book your flights.
The middle of April is a VERY popular time to travel in France.
There is still some funding available for attending the conference - see below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Understanding the roles that communication can play is increasingly seen as a
fundamental part of learning. In this conference, key European researchers
will elaborate on their methodologies and their research to explore issues in
learning to model. This is a remarkable opportunity made possible through
European Union funding.
Recent advances in understanding the interaction between modes of
communication and the content & process of modelling provides both a challenge
and an opportunity. The challenge is to utilise the different perspectives on
communicative interactions to make sense of the research previously done on
modelling itself and to create a new synergy between researchers from
different disciplines. The conference will provide opportunity to bring
together key researchers from the relevant fields along with young researchers
to seek to provide new insights into the state of the art.
The conference aims to provide both a better theoretical understanding of the
processes at work, of the techniques that can be deployed and of how we can
``engineer'' the social/computational/didactic environment to help students
build and use their models.
Researchers will be able to discuss their work with some of the leading
figures in this multidisciplinary area.

Location
--------
Corsica is one of the most beautiful and remote areas of Mediterranean
Europe. It is worth considering using the opportunity of having a few days
extra visiting this spectacular island. Examine local information on the Web
in English (http://w3.corsenet.com/corse-us.html);

Financial Support
-----------------
People wishing to apply for financial support must do this no later
than February 14th 1999.
To gain financial support from funds provided by the EU TMR programme then
some requirements have to be satisfied:
Age Researchers must be aged 35 years or less at the
time of the event. Researchers above this age limit
can normally only benefit if they participate as
speakers.
Qualifications Researchers must be doctoral students or holders of
a doctoral degree or equivalent qualification.
Nationality Researchers must be nationals of a Community Member
State or a State associated with the Programme
(Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Norway).
Finance Candidates fulfilling the above mentioned
requirements can apply for support as follows:
* Young researchers may be supported on a full
cost basis (i.e. travel, subsistence and
conference fees up to 100%)
* Speakers and teaching staff are entitled to
receive TMR support up to a maximum of 50% of
their expenses.
Paper Submission
----------------
The deadline for paper submissions is 28th February. People wishing
to make a short presentation should inform the organising committee no
later than 30th March 1999.
Papers should be submitted in a postscript format. Since the paper will be
printed as it is submitted the authors are requested to keep some general
formatting details. Formatting instructions can be obtained at the web site at
http://www.cbl.leeds.ac.uk/~c-lemmas/Submission.html
The paper should be sent in an electronic form. The paper may be either sent

Tourism and Culture
-------------------
Corsica offers a wide range of things to see and places to visit. Ajaccio is
around 500 years old and the city is a short distance from the Iles
Sanguinaires one of many beauty spots. There are two official tours, the
'courtyard tour' and the 'garden tour' that will help you to discover the
city, but just walking in the streets is a pleasure. The old town houses the
Muse'e Fesch which has a collection of Italian primitives second only to that
in the Louvre. The island also has a multitude of sacred monuments and
buildings to explore, including 11th and 12th Century Romanesque and 16th and
17th Century Baroque churches.
The island offers a wide range of things to see and places to visit. On the
east coast are the highlands where 'Vallee des Corses' derives its names from
the chestnut plantations which extends over thousand of acres and the centre
of the island has sites of outstanding beauty.
