Bob,
I agree with your point in this sense.
Education is a social process and collaboration (which still needs a
proper framework), brings out that dimension.
Learning styles have relevance where individuals are left on their and
their study skills and motivation are weak (factors that can be overcome
by the social process of collaboration).
Concern with designing distance learning materials may well need to
address learning styles as part of the instructional design.
However you could interpret your point as saying we need to think about
how we design the 'classroom' of the future. I don't favour the approach
where a Learning Centre serves solitary individuals accessing materials
over an Internet link .
I would rather have a cybercafe as a classroom with food, snacks,
noticeboards, workspaces and moveable furniture surrounded by ICT
workstations in a shared collaborative space.
This would bring people together and they would learn a sense of being
a part of a real learning community, because we are tactile, sensual
creatures not disembodied synapses. There would be a lot of
unintentional learning too, which really matters if we are to have any,
informed social awareness.
I am not a TCP/IP address!

Regarding Bill's note that collaborative learning might compensate for the
difficulties a teacher has in trying to accommodate many different
learning
styles. There is a small point of logic here I think. If a student cannot
learn from a teacher or a book because it does not conform to their
learning
style, how will that same student be able to accommodate the possibly
several learning styles in a study group. I cannot see that the "problem"
of learning styles is solved by passing it from to teacher to students.
