This is an interesting issue that we have spent dozens upon dozens of
hours debating and implementing. To be short.... we currently reward
our faculty $1000 per credit hour for developing material for an
electronic course (in digital format of course), which means that all
content must be online. However, I have seen one company that
specializes in online course development charge $5000 for a 3 hour
course to be put online (and yes, that is if you supply the content).
Since the trend seems to be turning more and more everyday for education
to be delivered either electronically or through another distant means
so that Universities can keep their doors open, I see the cost of the
development of such material escalating. Faculty just don't want to
spend the extra time to develop the materials for that type of
compensation, especially if they are forced by the University (bad idea
there). I myself have developed an online course, and frankly, the
$1000 a credit hour seemed very rich up front, but after dealing with
the materials, resources, and having created all of the pages, images,
etc. for electronic means, it equaled out to about $4 or $5 an hour.
Frankly not worth it in my opinion. What seems to be the trend at other
places offering distance education?
