Subject: [ifets] 'Information' in workplace vs. educational environments

Well, our power's back on in most places so your moderator can
re-appear! In reviewing comments from the past couple of days, the
topic of 'information' and information-sharing in virtual environments
has arisen. If we accept the definition of information as 'applied
data' (i.e., raw data applied to a specific problem or situation), then
we have yet another distinction between the workplace and the formal
educational environment. Workplace goals and priorities frequently
provide a clearer parameter to 'applications', with the assumption that
employees will strive toward a commonality.

There is little such commonality among individuals in formal education,
where each may be pursuing one's own goals. The possible exception is
cohort learning. The 'distance' version of cohort learning is
intriguing in that it adapts the notion of group intimacy and
collaboration from the traditional, actual model(s), but only uses
in-person meetings occasionally through the course or program. The
remainder of the time, collaboration is virtual, via both faculty and
student driven activities. Having developed courseware and taught
within cohort programs at graduate level, I've seen far more interaction
among students, as opposed to interaction solely with faculty, as well
as a more shared notion of how raw data may be applied to create
'information'.
