University professors in disciplines that serve students from a variety of
colleges must be alert to student learning styles. This is particularly
true in the grading of papers and essay examinations. As a professor in the
field of social sciences I found that I tended to give higher grades to
students from related disciplines. The fine arts, engineering, and business
students simply did not express themselves in ways that struck a responsive
chord. Their analytic approach was all wrong and their use of language was
different. After being introduced to llearning styles I began to understand
that, while different, the student work was not necessarily wrong. I put
aside my own language and analytic biases and graded student work with
greater understanding, perception, and fairness. Finally, I began to
include examples, illustrations, and some activities into my courses which
might enhance understanding by the students from different disciplines. I
feel that my understanding of learning styles improved my skills as a
teacher and greatly benefited students.
