Re Discussion Summary #2

In his text 'Web Teaching: A guide to designing interactive teaching for
the world wide web' David Brooks of the University of Nebraska suggests
that there is little hard evidence supporting the view that taking student
learning styles into account leads to positive learning outcomes. He
suggests it is one of several notions with high face validity but little
substance. He states he has 'written this section to discourage you from
thinking too much about about learning styles as you plan instructional
materials...'(p.25)

He also suggests 'there is a counter view about whether teachers should try
to tailor instruction to learning styles. In this view, the best outcome
for students is to expose them to many kinds of learning experiences
regardless of how well these might match each student's style, with the
intended goal being to better enable them to learn under a very wide range
of situations and circumstances' (p.27)

I confess to having some sympathy with this position. If higher education
is about preparing students to suceed in a competitive world they need to
learn at some point that success depends among other things on overcoming
ones natural inclinations, desires and limitations.
