I work with many simulations in my camps. There needs to be some sort of
metacognitive monitoring. As my research shows, discovery leaves a lot to be
desired by many studetns for a variety of reasons. While I am not sure about
what is considered "intelligent discovery environments" the user needs to be
engaged in not only metacognitive pursuits but showing the results and giving
feedack in one shape or form.
The current buzz word with several projects " engaged" gives the wrong
impression. It is easy to be engaged. Whether they are learning something ,
that is sometimes a whole different ball game.

Dear Alfred,
Designers of interactive learning environments probably see the ability of
a piece of software to be both supportive of discovery learning AND able to
model individual knowledge & preferences as somewhat contradictory.
Traditionally the more adaptivity (changes what it does to suit a learner)
that is built into a system the less reactive (able to respond to learner
command) it becomes. But there are exceptions of which even Logo can be
considered as one. It is a highly reactive discovery environment which
responds to a range of learner input, and yet it changes what it does to
suit an individual user through learning proceedures from that user. If you
want to even better illustrate how those three points may be present in a
computer-based learning system, use intelligent help systems, intelligent
discovery environments and adaptive learning environments as examples.
Best Regards,
john
