Dear Alfred,

Designers of interactive learning environmments probably see the ability of
a piece of software to be both supportive of discovery learning AND able to
model individual knowledge & preferences as somewhat contradictory.
Traditionally the more adaptivity (changes what it does to suit a learner)
that is built into a system the less reactive (able to respond to learner
command) it becomes. But there are exceptions of which even Logo can be
considered as one. It is a highly reactive discovery environment which
responds to a range of learner input, and yet it changes what it does to
suit an individual user through learning proceedures from that user. If you
want to even better illustrate how those three points may be present in a
computer-based learning system, use intelligent help systems, intelligent
discovery environments and adaptive learning environments as examples.

Best Regards,
john
