Greetings, all. Several of you have commented on aspects of individual learning that are subject to
'difference', primarily cultural. While it is certainly true that culture can have a great impact on
attitudes and expectations particularly regarding the roles and relationships of teacher and learner, our
topic is more specific. However, such cultural factors may be true across the board. This discussion is
more specific, and is investigating those differences that can be identified and 'ranked' in importance in
the formal learning environment vs. workplace environment.
In such a case, organizational rather than sociocultural distinctions can be key, especially if they
dictate what learning behaviors are rewarded or disciplined. There are critical differences between the
mindset and rationales for formal institutional learning, which may be required by law or industry, and
workplace learnig, which may be motivated by the potential for promotion, visibility or outplacement
potential. Within the workplace, there are also differences between short-term skills training,
organization or industry wide continuing education and professional development.
It is in these specific 'institutional vs. workplace' environments that we seek your thoughts and
experiences. Regards, Nora Carrol.
