Nora, I think we should also consider cultural differences that may
influence particular adults or groups to approach distance ed differently.
One thing that struck me as I read the paper about your experience in Canada
was the fact that the group had a high percentage of students from an Asian
culture. I thought this helped to account for their desire to have
information delivered in a formal way rather than in a cooperative way or in
a way in which the instructor attempted to assume the role of a peer in a
facilitative relationship. The reverence in which teachers are held in many
Asian cultures would make this approach foreign and uncomfortable to them,
in my opinion.
