and that is the billion doallar question which is striking at the heart
of every university adminstrator and particularly every faculty member
who understands that soom a student will have a choice of taking
archaeology 101 from:
a well presented media course using the great arc;haeologists from
around the world
b) Indian Jones and Leonard Nemoy (Mr Spock doing a presentation from
Lucas Light and Magic and the Discovery Channel
c) Professor "X" from univesity "Y" with his or her self developed web
pages
And the student will have the opportunity to have this experience
certified by:
a) a major medallion University
b) A very credible institution which keeps and evaluates student
portfolios or
c) University "Y" where professor "x" is employed
And to make it more interesting, the future is not down the line, but is
here today, only not in its complete and well defined form.
Of course, the other issue here is whether a student wants to pay "k"
for the course or a semester program or 2-3 times "k" for taking the
experience on a unviersity campus- can an academic instituion sell this
on campus experience against a virtual program? A major university
thinks it can charge twice as much for a grduate business degree in
virtual space over coming to its campus- so there is some understanding
that this is a market game- on the other hand, undergraduate programs
might be a different story- after all, fraternity parties and social
interaction don't compute<grin>
