Of course, synchronous and asysnchronous are not new in terms of the
underlying concepts, but these words do have a role in helping us to
differentiate among different kinds of online teaching and learning
experiences. At the same time, a number of people are now employing these
terms to help analyze exactly what occurs in more traditional environments.
Given our jargon-happy times, one supposes that the words are being over-used,
but this should not detract totally from their legitimate usefulness among
analysts of teaching and learning environments. --LL
