CONCEPTS AND ONTOLOGIES IN WEB-BASED EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS
CALL FOR PAPERS
Conceptual (ontological) structures, such as concept maps, conceptual
graphs, topic maps, etc. have a great deal of potential for organizing,
processing, and visualizing domain knowledge in Web-based Educational System
(WBES). Developments in concept-based visualization and navigation can
support learners to get oriented within a subject domain and build up their
own understanding and conceptual associations. They can enhance their visual
thinking and memory and trigger associative ways of processing, reflecting
and analyzing information. The issues of ontological engineering for WBES
resources and ontology-aware courseware and authoring become also in focus
in the AIED society, since ontology-based architectures allow for reuse,
sharing, and exchange of knowledge, resources, and functional components. In
order to ensure real interoperability between various WBES (with respect to
their knowledge and learning objects) standardization should be achieved.
The use of common standardized languages such as XML, RDF and OWL, as well
as EML and LOM standards, to mark-up the teaching content, organize the
knowledge structures and describe the process of learning within WBES is a
major step in this direction.
Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to:
* Using conceptual structures (concept maps, conceptual graphs, topic maps,
ontologies) in WBES to support
-- knowledge organization and processing (acquisition, systematization,
reasoning)
-- information retrieval, hypertext and hypermedia navigation and
exploration
-- problem solving
-- user/group interactions
-- adaptivity with respect to learners, instructors, and courseware authors
* Design and implementation aspects of concept-based WBES
-- architectures and methodologies
-- specification languages
-- visualization of conceptual structures
-- sharing and reuse of conceptual structures
-- conceptual structures and authoring tools
* Evaluation of the impact of concept-based WBES on the efficiency and
effectiveness of student learning and/or courseware authoring.
We are soliciting quality papers to complete the special issue, which will
be based on the best papers of the Workshop on Concepts and Ontologies in
WBES, held in conjunction with ICCE2002, Auckland, NZ, December 2002
(http://wwwis.win.tue.nl/~laroyo/ICCE2002_Workshop/CFP.htm).
All papers will be refereed according to standard IJCEELL procedures.
Articles should be Word documents, 10 to 12 pages long. Please send your
submission to the guest editors by email.
