If I may add my sixpence worth here. The college I work for have spent a
lot of time, energy and money in providing the necessary tools and
equipement to enable the IT Department to deliver courses right across the
board. Over the past year we have developed a specialist room which is a
self-contained network. Connection t the Interent is provided through the
main college firewall, but apart from this there is no involvement from the
college network or the IT technicians. We can, therefore, deliver
networking and hardware courses, dismantling the network and any number of
PCs, without inflicting any damage to the academic network throught the rest
of the college.

You have also mentioned simulations. In order to pursue a wide variety of
experiences for the students, we have incorporated a product called VMWare -
Virtual Machine softWare. this allows us to install, run and manage any
operating system without causing any damage or having to install OS from
scratch.

A facility like this is fantastic and we are very fortunate to have it.
Also this college is very forward thinking, so in the nxt few years we will
reap the financial rewards offered by several bodies, and have begun the
process of rebuilding the college from scratch. Literally! The plan is to
bring the whole college into the 21 century, which means heavy investment in
IT, and to allow for the development of such rooms.

While the web offers a range of learning experiences, I personally would not
trade it for the real thing.

In light of your remarks here, I can only consider myself to be very lucky.
