Subject: [IFETS-DISCUSSION:4140] POLTS

I'm new to this group so I hope this is not merely repeating what someone
else has said, but here is my view.

There are three related but distinct disciplines: content creation,
information architecture, and instructional design.

Instructional design is putting together the resources to teach something. It
might be assembling existing resources, editing/modifying existing resources,
or creating resources (including live instruction).

POLTS would be a system that would allow someone to easily access, assemble,
edit, and deliver resources to teach something. POLTS would be the
Information Architecture. As such, it must be able not only to deliver
content to the student, but also make it easy for the instructional designer
(who might be the instructor) to find, assemble, and edit existing content.
It should also have the ability to track what users are doing and provide
some reporting, analysis, and recommendations.

Content would come from any conceivable source. It could be a document, HTML
page, PowerPoint presentation, video, news feed, Flash animation, etc. it
could also be assessment questions, practice exercises, or simulations.

In some cases, the content creator would place the content in POLTS. In
others POLTS might find the content itself. POLTS would thus be partly a
digital assets management tool. But POLTS might have a digital rights
management component as well, especially if one wanted to encourage
professional content creators to offer their materials through POLTS.
