Re: Brent Muirhead's original paper on assessment
Dr. Muirhead's discussion for online assessment is very timely for me. I was able to re-evaluate my own assessment procedures for an online course I recently taught. The idea that I found most helpful was that of incorporating the assessment as part of instruction and as part of the original design of the course. And yes, it is very time consuming. I also found that the students (for good or for bad) did not recognize the assessment as instruction. This was shown when they submitted their course evaluations. They gave it top marks for immediate and valuable assessments and feedback, but felt that there should have been more instruction. The point is that not only the deliverers of the course need to be re-oriented but also those who are on the receiving end need to be aware of the importance of the assessment and feedback.
