Before the advent of the modern school, the main method of education
was story telling. I rather suspect that the oral story telling
tradition was not an entirely spectator sport. Just as children
today will interact with a parent who is reading them a bedtime
story, I imagine there was some fluidity in the retelling of the
foundation stories of older cultures.
In the 21st Century, I foresee computer technology playing an
important role in the revival of story craft as a vehicle for
learning. Some of the best educational software takes the form
of interactive adventure stories where the child assumes the
role of the central character in the story and relives the trials,
tribulations, and successes of the hero.
To date, some of the most engaging educational software has combined
the adventure story with challenging puzzles to be solved enroute to
winning the quest.
I expect to see major advances in the theory and technology of
story craft, and increasing reliance on interactive stories as
a medium of education.
