The education model in our public school system is organized around
teaching. Alternative systems, such as Montessori, are organized around
learning. The middle ground is mentoring.
My role model for mentoring is Socrates. See, for example, "Socrates at
the Terminal" by Norman Weinstein:

The subtitle of Weinstein's paper is "Emotion's Neglected Role in
High-Tech Education." Good mentoring requires the mentor to pay
attention to the learner's affective emotional states, and to adapt
the mentoring strategy accordingly.
The foundation for affect-sensitive mentoring is a model of learning
and emotions.
At the MIT Media Lab, we are working on an NSF-funded project called
The Learning Companion, which is based on such a model. You can find
