Prof Ozden-
We deliver our Education Specialist (advanced masters) completely online
(http://teach.valdosta.edu/edsonline/edsonline.html). I found the level of student
engagement in debate and conversation to be much higher in my online courses than a
regular classroom. Ther are a few elements I put in place each semester to get them
talking. Online discussion participation is often part of their final grade.
Typically, I lead and facilitate the weekly discussions by posting articles to read
one week ahead of time. The students then react to a set of questions I post in the
discussion forum area of WebCT. They describe professional experiences, cite articles,
and provide urls for reference. I also require that each student respond to at least
on other student's comments. By the end of the semester we have lively and lengthy
discussions. It is likely over 1000 emails will be posted by a class of 20 students
during one semester. During the Spring semester a colleague and I tried a new format.
One or two students were assigned a topic and were asked to lead a discussion for one
week. They researched the topic, posted articles to be read, and posted questions to
start the discussion. We had many lively debates and a large number of emails.
