The word "engagement" is not really familiar to me in association with
online learning. I am familiar with the term, "participation."
Participation can be defined and measured in an online class,
particularly in relation to discussion questions, solicited comments and
submission of assignments. Instructors count the number of student
contributions which conform to defined parameters for "participation" in
such cases. It is assumed that participation will relate to learning.

Is there a relation between participation and learning? The studies
with which I am familiar are dated, yet they used the terms
"attention-time" and "time-on-task," in finding significant effects on
learning.

Terms: engagement, participation, attention-time, time-on-task, and
interaction. Now I am confused. :-)

the notion of engagement. Recommended articles? Have any measurement
instruments been developed to measure engagement in learning?
