One thing that we have to be careful of here is the difference between
teaching and testing. Most of the language education related sites are
devoted to testing. They are collections of quizzes.
Another point that needs to be considered is the difference between
"learning about" and "learning to". In Japan most junior and senior high
school students spend a lot of time learning such English as SV, SVC, SVO,
SVOO, and SVOC. For those who are not linguists, these possible sentence
patterns of English where S=subject, V=verb, C=complement, and O=object. The
better students learn these very well but can not put together a simple
sentence in English. This is an example of "learning about". "Learning to"
would be learning a language through understanding others and making your
ideas understood.
