Subject: [IFETS-DISCUSSION:1329] Discussion - Distilling a Language for Cyberspace

In the forthcoming discussion "Distilling a Language for Cyberspace" I
hope to develop a number of themes around this theme. The problem is
defined in the competitive chaos of cyberspace, which causes
frustration and defeated expectations in online learning, for both
instructors and students.

This discussion will seek ways towards an interpretation, if not
codification, of the 'chaos', with the aim of going some way to
discovering whether it's possible to teach an understanding of
cyberspace which avoids the the operational for interpretation. I have
promoted the idea that relationships in cyberspace are all about context
and in developing a language for context, the essential element may
be the human 'will to story'.

The essential questions might be:

Q1: Where are the elements of story in the online screen?

Q2: Is it possible to develop a 'language' for interpreting the online
screen, which would fulfil the need for story?

Q3: What might it look like?

Q4: Is there a teaching (pedagogy) valid for all cybertools,
based not on operational aspects but on interpretation?

Q5: What are the holistic concepts which might encompass this
teaching?

I am looking forward to this discussion and hope you find it
stimulating and thought-provoking.

John Laurie
