Call for Expressions of Interest in a Special topics Session at ODLAA FORUM
2001

At ODLAA 2001 in Sydney (http://www.oten.edu.au/odlaa/), we are planning to hold
a special session focussed on evaluating the impacts of information and
communications technology on learning and teaching practices in flexible
educational settings. We expect to be able to bring together as part of this
discussion, an international gathering of practitioners, with a broad range of
experience in dealing with evaluating how the use of ICT is influencing
approaches to flexible teaching and learning practices. The proposed session
would begin with brief presentations by the presenters chaired by a prominent
researcher and practitioner who will be able to comment on the presentations
and possible directions for future research on evaluating instruction for
flexible learning environments. The session will conclude with an open panel
discussion facilitated by the invited chair.

Papers accepted for presentation as part of this session at ODLAA 2001, will be
invited to be prepared for a Special Issue (on the topic) of "Distance
Education: An International Journal" ("Distance Education":
http://www.usq.edu.au/dec/decjourn/demain.htm). Those interested in being part
of this project should submit a 1, 000 word paper proposal to A/Professor Som
Naidu <s.naidu@unimelb.edu.au> no later than Friday, March 30th.

Key Focus: Evaluating the Effects of Information and Communications
Technology on Flexible Learning and Teaching Practices.

Sub-themes: Making the most of technology; Evaluating what works, how, and
why?

The use of information and communications technology (ICT) is changing flexible
learning and teaching practices in fundamental ways. For example, the
application of e-mail and computer conferencing, in conjunction with
multimedia, databases and electronic libraries has enabled the emergence of a
whole new kind of educational activity, namely e-education. The use of ICT is
also enabling educational institutions to rethink and re-engineer the nature of
their core educational functions. These initiatives have accelerated the change
in the roles of teachers from "deliverers of subject matter content" to
"moderators and facilitators of learning". They have also exposed students to
new models of learning such as "computer supported collaborative learning", and
"computer supported problem based learning". In the face of this growing
interest in the integration of technology into flexible learning and teaching,
questions continue to be asked about the fundamental ways in which
technology-enhanced teaching and learning is influencing teachers' approaches
to teaching and students' approaches to learning. There is a critical need for
a deeper-level understanding of how the adoption of ICT is changing teachers'
approaches to teaching and students' approach to learning. This includes, among
other things: exploring how are approaches to teaching being impacted; how is
teacher-thought about teaching and learning being modified; how are students'
approaches to learning changing; and how the nature of student support is
changing with the use of ICT? Papers presented, as part of this session will
focus attention on these questions, as well as methods and techniques employed
in the search for some of the answers.
