           COLLABORATIVE LEARNING IN NETWORKED ENVIRONMENTS
                           CALL FOR PAPERS

One of the biggest changes that has taken place in the educational
world has been the huge growth of distributed collaborative
environments which support a wide range of educational and training
activities. These networked environments may be found in classrooms,
providing additional support for groups of learners to work
productively together. They may also be delivered via the web to
provide networked distance learning environments, allowing teachers to
work together as well as students. Increasingly, they may be used in
widely different locations with quite different kinds of input and
output devices.

These new opportunities provide new challenges to examine
collaborative learning. For example, what lessons for effective
collaboration might be learned from use of the latest generation of
hand held devices? Can networked environments be more effectively
designed to customise the learning experience for both individuals and
groups? What kinds of problems and opportunities arise when
collaboration itself is taught in a networked environment? Can
effective new methods of analysis of group interactions be developed?
How can the bandwidth of useful personal information (gestures, facial
expressions) be increased and/or deployed to the advantage of both
those learning within distributed environments and those studying
collaboration itself? How effective are believable agents in
supporting collaborative learning?

Collaborative learning within networked environments has featured
strongly in conferences such as the CSCL series. The AI-ED
conferences and ICCE conferences have featured some progress in the
development of adaptive distributed learning environments.

The purpose of this special issue is to provide an understanding of
the progress being made in the interaction between the growing
research into many facets of collaboration and the rapid development
of new networked environments. Topics of interest for the special
issue include:

    * studies of collaboration within novel distributed classrooms,
        laboratories and eTraining environments

    * design, implementation and analysis of adaptive distributed
        collaborative systems

    * web based collaborative environments

    * distributed collaborative problem based learning

    * analytic methods for examining networked collaboration

    * wireless collaborative environments

    * collaborative environments supporting people and software agents
        working together

All papers will be refereed according to standard IJCEELL procedures
and should be submitted to the Special Issue Guest Editors. The
deadline for submissions is June 15th 2001. However, if you are
planning to submit a paper, we ask you to contact the Guest Editors as
early as possible. Providing a tentative title and short abstract
would be appreciated.

Electronic submissions are encouraged. The preferred word processing
program for electronic submission is Microsoft Word. Please make sure
the document is single spaced and no more than 12 pages in length.

If it is necessary to provide a hard-copy submission then please
contact the guest editors.
