A short reply to Dennis:

My perspective is that these elements are aspects of the community
element. A significant partner or friend seems most clearly to be an
aspect of community, and important one, to be sure (whether it is
essential is open to debate).
The value base is harder, but I believe that value - whether moral
value, standards of truth or evidence, etc - are defined by community
and, in the knowledge base, become properties of items of knowledge.
In this sense my approach to truth is more Kuhnian than it is, say,
Platonic.
And I sincerely hope that death, difficulties, etc., are *not*
prerequisites to learning, though I would have to look at the
evidence to tell one way or another.
