Dear All,
After watching the way students use rich ICT based material I
am coming to the conclusion that what students want, and the most
effective way for them to learn, is for them to be in a learning rich
enviroment.
In turn this makes me consider the possibility that the role of the
teacher/mentor/facilitator is to create that enviroment rather than to
actively participate in it. The key elements to a learning rich
enviroment seem to be good learning resources (digital and paper),
a well structured course, and a peer group interested in learning the
same things.
Students certainly seem to happier to come to their own
conclusions rather than be told the conclusion by a lecturer. So my
guess in response to Ted and Ian's points is that bricks and mortar
will remain. However, they will be places where people who wish to
learn the same things come in order to share the experience of
being in a learning rich enviroment. A part of that enviroment will be
teacher/mentor/facilitators, but probably only a minor part. And
there will be no place for lecturers, only properly qualified and
experienced teacher/mentor/facilitators.
So what happens to research? That is question would like to hear
other peoples views on, as well as on the above.
