Hi Listers,

The real answer to Ian's question as to whether bricks and mortar will be
replaced by computers in the home, thus eliminating most direct human
contactin lasssrooms, will depend upon who really controls the system. many
administrators are indeed trying to use technology to economize. If they are
in control then the extreme doesn't seem so unrealistic. if professors
continue to rely on a pure lecture paradigm for teaching then computers may
well be able to replace them as a favored mode for information deliverty
only.

After watching the development and use of technology and participating
in a number of discussion groups I am becoming more and more convinced that
the students are actually in control of the system and they will continue
to demand human contact in the form of a professor, in a class, where they
can interact with their peers and the professor. A few students will use
distance learning for its convenience. I have observed that they come to the
conclusion that in class, human interactions, cannot be replicated over the
internet and thus the value of pure internet delivery as an equal to
classroom interaction is overrated. They then return to the classroom
environment.

The one problem I see with college teaching is that too many professors
do rely on straight lecture formats. If there is little or no interaction in
the classroom then computer delivery of information may equal class delivery
approaches.

I have written an article on thus subjecct which may be viewed at my web
