Charles Adamson pointed out another dimension of role play and
collaboration. In a sense, role play itself is a collaboration and
co-operative learning task. However it is also possible to have
collaboration *outside* the role play - students as a group play one role.
My intuition is that for language learning, the role play provides
discussion points for the intra-group communication. If the language used
by this intra-group communication is the same of the target langauge of the
learning objective, the learning opportunity created in this outside role
play is equally important. In Adamson's case, I suppose the outside role
play activity may be mediated via computer as well.
Back to identifying "ideal features" of role play technology, I would
identify the second feature (continuing from the feature list earlier) as:
Feature two: support out of role play collaborative activities
cheers
